| Ryan Routh |
Ryan Routh, 59, has been found guilty in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. The jury convicted him on five separate criminal charges, including:
- Attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate
- Use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime
- Assault on a federal officer
- Firearm possession while a felon
- Use of a gun with a defaced serial number
Following this verdict, Routh had an outburst in the courtroom, after which marshals forcibly removed him.
Judge Aileen Cannon said: "Despite your outburst today, I thank you for your time." Routh claimed in his closing arguments that he lacked the "capacity to kill." But prosecutors presented evidence that he had developed a methodical plan against Trump—purchasing military-grade weapons, tracking Trump's movements, using dozens of burner phones, and hiding out on a golf course with a rifle.
The Secret Service spotted his rifle and he was arrested.
Pam Bondi, former Attorney General, wrote: "This was not just an attack on a President, but an attack on the entire nation."
The jury delivered its verdict in just two hours, and Routh now faces up to life imprisonment.
Highlight:
Routh tried to portray himself as "peaceful and gentle" in his defense, but both the jury and prosecution agreed he was a serious threat.
The sentencing hearing will take place in December.
