When David Lammy is named foreign secretary, Rachel Reeves becomes the first female finance minister in UK history.

Following his center-left Labour Party's resounding victory in the general election that ended 14 years of Conservative administration, the newly elected Kieren Starmer of the United Kingdom has named important members of his ministerial team.

As the first woman to hold the position in UK history, Starmer named Rachel Reeves as finance minister on Friday. The Bank of England economist and previous child chess champion has promised to strengthen fiscal restraint while fostering national economic growth.

“It is the honour of my life to have been appointed chancellor of the exchequer,” Reeves wrote on social media platform X.

“To every young girl and woman reading this, let today show that there should be no limits on your ambitions.”

David Lammy was a trailblazing politician appointed foreign secretary by Starmer.

Lammy was raised in Tottenham, a neighbourhood in north London, where he was born to Guyanese immigrants and has served as a representative in parliament since 2000.

When Lammy was first elected at the age of 27, he became the youngest member of parliament (MP). He quickly obtained experience as a minister, holding positions in the administrations of Gordon Brown and Tony Blair.

After being appointed foreign secretary on Friday, Lammy reaffirmed his support for international efforts to bring about a "immediate ceasefire" in Israel's war on Gaza and for the release of the remaining hostages.

In order to achieve those two goals, the 51-year-old declared he will "get to work with tireless diplomacy."

“All of us recognise the agony of communities who have seen the scenes coming out of Israel and Gaza,” Lammy said from the Foreign Office.

“But the job now is to get to work with tireless diplomacy to support an immediate ceasefire and move towards getting those hostages out”.

Rayner named as Starmer’s deputy

As the party's deputy leader in 2020, Angela Rayner was selected by party members without consulting the leader in question. She will serve as Starmer's deputy prime minister and continue to hold the positions of housing, communities and levelling up.

The 44-year-old has made no secret of her difficult upbringing, which included early school dropout as a young mother and living up in a public housing complex with minimal resources.

She began her professional life as a labour union official before becoming a politician.

Yvette Cooper, who held the positions of work and pensions secretary and chief secretary to the treasury in the administration of former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown from 2008 to 2010, has been appointed home secretary.

The first surprise among the members of the Labour leader's inner circle was Lisa Nandy's elevation to the position of culture secretary following Thangam Debbonaire's defeat by the Green Party for the position of brief in the shadow cabinet.

The rest of the Cabinet is a reflection of Starmer's shadow government, which included Pat McFadden, the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster who was instrumental in forming Labour's election campaign.

Shabana Mahmood was appointed justice secretary while John Healey was named defence secretary. Bridget Phillipson was appointed education secretary, and Wes Streeting was named health secretary.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband was the previous leader of the Labour Party and the leader of the opposition from 2010 to 2015. The new leader of the House of Commons will be Lucy Powell.
