Blackpool Police said a 36-year-old man was arrested in west London on Monday night on suspicion of theft.
They said he was the suspect accused of stealing beer from a restaurant at the seaside town in northwest England in September.
After the theft was reported, police took to Facebook to appeal to the public for help identifying the man, including a photo taken from CCTV footage.
The post, which has since been deleted, attracted unprecedented attention after it was pointed out the suspect bore a striking resemblance to Schwimmer, best known for his role as Ross Gellar on Friends.
It received more than 120,000 comments, most of which included references to the popular '90s sitcom.
The post was shared more than 65,000 times, eventually reaching Schwimmer, who also got in on the joke.
The 52-year-old actor made a spoof video of the alleged robbery from a shop in New York, which was viewed more than 9 million times.Officers, I swear it wasn't me.— schwim (@DavidSchwimmer) October 24, 2018
As you can see, I was in New York.
To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.#itwasntme pic.twitter.com/EDFF9dZoYR
Eventually the public appeal proved successful for Blackpool Police, who continued the joke while confirming the arrest on Twitter.
"Following the appeal we posted looking for a man who resembles a well-known actor, we now have an update," the force said in a tweet.
"Thanks to our colleagues @MetPoliceUK, a 36-year-old man was arrested in Southall last night on suspicion of theft.
"Thanks for the support @DavidSchwimmer!"
The Metropolitan Police said it was happy to help, signing off its tweet with the hashtag #illbethereforyou, a reference to the Friends theme song by The Rembrandts.
