Hillary Clinton looked unfazed as she fronted a speaking event in Florida today.
Hillary Clinton was one of seven high-profile targeted by mail bombs |
"As a person, I'm great," the former Secretary of State said.
"As an American, I'm worried."
Mrs Clinton was one of seven high profile Americans targeted by crude mail bombs, including former president Barack Obama.
"What we saw here today was an effort to terrorise," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
"This clearly is an act of terror."
That was the feeling on the streets of New York and it's a feeling creeping across America in the lead up to November's mid-term elections.
As the political vitriol increases, so too the tension and the division between democrats and republicans (or more those supporting Donald Trump and those against him) grow.
Several streets of New York were shut down by a bomb sent to former CIA director John Brennan, care of CNN's office in the Big Apple.
The other targets: former Attorney-General Eric Holder, billionaire Democratic donor George Soros and congresswomen Maxine Waters and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Donald Trump has called the incident egregious and abhorrent |
All are regular targets of the president.
Donald Trump called the attempted attacks "egregious" and "abhorrent" but wouldn’t mention the targets by name.
The history of America is littered with political violence, four presidents were assassinated.
But sadly the violence isn’t all from the era of black and white television.
Sixteen months ago, Republican whip Steve Scalise was shot while practising for a congressional baseball game.
Six years before that it was Democrat Gabby Giffords.
Last August a protester was killed during white supremacy riots in Virginia.
Police blocked off the streets surrounding the building |
Perhaps that's why Hillary Clinton is worried "as an American" right now.
Divisions are growing.
"We want all sides to come together in peace and harmony," the president said at a rally tonight.
Former US president Barack Obama was one of the Democrat targets |
"We can do it. We can do it. It'll happen."
In this rally there was no mention of the targets of the attack.
In the past Maxine Waters was called "low IQ", Hillary Clinton was "crooked" and CNN "the enemy of the people".
Tonight, both major parties blamed the other for spurring the violence while also calling for calm.
The FBI has called the explosive devices used "unsophisticated".
But in this environment, that one unsophisticated bomb could take a life, and that life could be the spark that ignites a new wave of political violence in the United States.
Elections are 13 days away.
