The Prince of Wales, right, is understood to be keen to strip Prince Andrew, left, of his titles, with King Charles, centre, seeing this as necessary to ease his son’s path to the throne. |
According to sources, Buckingham Palace has reached a "tipping point" amid growing headlines linking Prince Andrew to Jeffrey Epstein and a senior Chinese Communist Party official.
We have learned that Prince William (Prince of Wales) also wants his uncle's titles revoked before he inherits the throne. King Charles also believes this step will create a "smooth path" for his son.
The Times wrote that removing Andrew's dukedom would require an Act of Parliament, but government and public support could be obtained if the King's backing is obtained.
A royal insider said: "It feels like we are reaching a tipping point." They also said that anxiety and concern is growing within the Royal Household because of continuous negative publicity affecting the monarchy's reputation.
Another option being considered is removing Prince Andrew from the Order of the Garter, with King Charles reportedly actively discussing it.All of this comes after some shocking claims recently surfaced in the posthumous memoir of Virginia Giuffre, a victim of Epstein's network. Giuffre wrote in her book that Andrew behaved "as if having sex with me was his birthright."
Prince Andrew never accepted this allegation and settled the civil case with Giuffre out-of-court for £12 million in 2022—without admitting liability.
Reports also suggest that Andrew met with Cai Qi, a member of China's Politburo, during 2018–2019. Cai was suspected of receiving sensitive UK information from two British nationals accused of spying for Beijing. This case was recently dropped by the CPS, and both have claimed their innocence.
The Mail on Sunday published emails that appear to show Prince Andrew was in contact with Epstein more than the latter claimed during his BBC Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis.
Buckingham Palace reportedly wanted Andrew to voluntarily relinquish his titles to avoid forced removal. Sources say that despite procedural difficulties, the Palace wanted Andrew to "act with honour."
But if he refuses, King Charles is prepared to make a firm decision.
Representatives at Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and the Duke of York were approached for comment, but Kensington Palace declined to comment.
