An 18-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being shot while standing on the balcony of a Surfers Paradise hotel.
Hayden Miller was on the balcony at the Tiki Village resort, celebrating a birthday, when he was shot in his left arm from a neighbouring unit.
The shooting sent nearby streets into lockdown as police swarmed the area, with the Gold Coast Highway closed between Thomas Drive and Beach Road.
"I didn't know what was going on," witness Nathaniel Ward told 9News.
"Like I just had to run out of there quick-smart.
"I was kind of scared, to be honest."
Police say Mr Miller did not know his attacker, who remains at large.
We understands the violence was sparked because the teen was smoking a cigarette.
Mr Miller was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
He underwent surgery and will remain in hospital tonight.
