Mrs Trump said she had "much more important things to think about". In an interview with ABC News, excerpts of which were broadcast yesterday, the US first lady was asked about "your husband's alleged infidelities".

She said: "It is not a concern and focus of mine. I'm a mother and a first lady, and I have much more important things to think about, and to do."

Mrs Trump (48) added: "I know people like to speculate and media like to speculate about our marriage, and circulate the gossip. I understand the gossip sells newspapers, magazines and, unfortunately, we live in this kind of world today.

"It's not always pleasant, of course, but I know what is right and what is wrong and what is true and not true."

Asked whether she loved her husband, the first lady replied: "Yes, we are fine. Yes. It's what media speculate, and it's gossip. It's not always correct stuff."

ABC conducted the rare interview with the Slovenia-born former model, the president's third wife, while she was on a solo visit to Africa last week.

The network said no subjects had been declared off limits before the interview.

In asking about the president's "alleged infidelities" the interviewer was referring to allegations by women including porn star Stormy Daniels, who has claimed she had an affair with Mr Trump in 2006. Mr Trump has denied the allegation.

Mrs Trump, dressed in jodhpurs with a safari pith helmet at her side, kept her answers short and to the point.

She gave a wry smile when asked about comments about her marriage made by the president's lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

Mr Giuliani said in June that the first lady believes her husband's denials about the alleged affair with Ms Daniels.

Mrs Trump told ABC: "I never talked to Mr Giuliani."

She also rejected speculation that she wants to move back to New York. Mrs Trump said: "I am enjoying it. I really love to live in Washington and the White House."
