DONALD Trump is winning over those who reluctantly voted for him in 2016, new polling suggests, as his Republican party looks set to maintain control of Congress in the crucial midterm elections.
US midterm elections: New polling suggests Trump voters are more optimistic than a year ago |
Over the past year, more Trump supporters and more of those who voted for him just to keep Hillary Clinton out of the White House now believe the United States is “heading in the right direction”, according to research by Lord Ashcroft.
The Tory peer and opinion pollster surveyed 6,000 US adults in late August and found both groups of voters are more optimistic about the future of the country than they were nearly a year ago.
He said: “Since last October there has been a marked shift towards the optimistic view, including a 14-point increase among both positive and reluctant Trump voters saying the country is on the right track.”
A massive 87 percent of positive Trump voters - those who backed him because they wanted him to become president - believe the US is headed in the right direction.
Meanwhile, 65 percent of those who voted for the former reality TV star to keep Mrs Clinton from office now have a positive outlook for the country.
However despite an increase in optimism among his voters, the poll found the majority of those polled (51 percent) believes the US is “on the wrong track”.
Just over a third (36 percent) of all of those surveyed said the country is heading in the right direction, while 13 percent said they did not know.
Mr Trump is not up for re-election until 2020 but the stakes are high as his Republican party is seeking to retain its majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate during November’s midterm vote.
The polling also revealed a majority of Americans believe Mr Trump is making at least some headway towards delivering on his election promises.
Just under a quarter (24 percent) said “a great deal of progress” is being made while 32 percent said they have seen “some progress”.
Conversely, 21 percent of those surveyed said they believed Mr Trump has made “little or no progress” on his election agenda while 23 percent said “not very much” headway had been made.
Mr Trump made a series of promises in the run-up to the 2016 presidential vote, several of which he has successfully delivered on.
Mr Trump has made good on some election pledges but others remain undelivere |
The real estate mogul pledged to pass huge tax cuts for businesses and working Americans, which he delivered in December 2017, though the impact of the package has been disputed.
He also promised to appoint a conservative justice to the Supreme Court, a pledge he made good on when Neil Gorsuch was sworn into office in April.
However one of his biggest promises, the construction of a border wall along the US-Mexico frontier, has yet to be delivered.
Mr Trump will need the approval of Congress to sign off on the multi-billion dollar project but this would be highly unlikely if the Democrats win majorities.
The majority of the midterms will be held on November 6.
