Suicide Bomber Attacks Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan
A man wearing a suicide vest caused a deadly explosion at Bagram Airfield — the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan — early Saturday morning, a senior U.S. military official told NBC News.
The attack occurred around 5:30 am local time as people were gathering for a post Veterans Day fun run.
The official said the number of dead is in the single digits and that more were injured after the vest was detonated.
The individual chose the time and location because he "was looking for an opportunity to do the most damage," the official said.
The base was put on lockdown and security is searching buildings to ensure the incident is not part of a larger plot.
The official could not say how someone got on base with a suicide vest. Bagram has several layers of security, including retinal scans.
