Mexican captain Rafael Marquez, 37, looked to be almost in tears after scoring the winning goal
It's been a difficult week for Mexicans, especially those in the United States.
The election of Donald Trump as US President has left many fearing for the future of millions of migrants.
So it was no surprise their national football team's 2-1 over the US in the World Cup qualifiers was met with an outpouring of emotion.
It was already a grudge match.
As well as being neighbours, the teams are usually competing for the top spots in the North, Central American and Caribbean group.
And the US has had the upper hand recently, beating Mexico 2-0 four times in a row.
But after Donald Trump, who referred to Mexicans as "rapists" and "criminals" during his campaign, won the race for the White House, the stakes got even higher.
Before the game, the players had sent their own signal by posing for the traditional pre-match photo arm in arm.
But once the whistle went, it was a full-blooded encounter.
Mexico took the lead, but were pegged back to 1-1 in the second half.
And then in the 89th minute, Mexico's 37-year-old captain Rafael Marquez won the match with a brilliant header.
The veteran defender looked to be almost in tears as he was mobbed by teammates.
The official Twitter account of Mexico's national team tweeted the goal with the hastag #ElFutbolEsNuestro which means "Football Is Ours".
