Melania Trump 'won't move into White House' as first lady

Donald Trump's wife and son will wait to move into the White House until the end of the school year, the president-elect confirmed on Sunday.

It was previously reported that Melania Trump planned to remain at the couple's penthouse in New York with Barron, their 10-year-old son after the inauguration.

Mr Trump said they will join him "right after he finishes school".

A source close to Mr Trump's transition team told the New York Post that "the campaign has been difficult for Barron" and the family hoped "to keep disruption to a minimum".

Mr Trump will be sworn in to the presidency in January, and most American schools finish in the late spring or early summer.

Another source told the newspaper that Mrs Trump would travel to the White House when needed, and was “fully on board” with taking on her role as first lady.

Similar concerns were raised ahead of President Barack Obama's first term, over whether Michelle, his wife, would remain in Chicago for their daughters' education. But in the end they moved together.

Although Mr Trump will move into the White House after inauguration on 20th January, he has reportedly already been talking to aides about splitting his time between Washington and his other residences.

He is said to be considering spending his weekends at his golf course in New Jersey,  his Mar-a-Lago private club in Palm Beach, or at his Manhattan residence in Trump Tower.

Mr Trump has spent almost three decades living in his gaudy, gold-leaf daubed  apartment on the 58th floor overlooking Central Park.

Even when criss-crossing the country for the presidential campaign Mr Trump tried to fly back to the apartment on his private jet so that he could sleep in his own bed.

The decision to spend time at the Manhattan residence presents a massive security challenge for the secret service and New York law enforcement officials.

“That building is going to become the White House of New York,” said Jim Reese, a former Delta Force commander and president of TigerSwan, a global security company based in North Carolina.

Located on Fifth Avenue the volume of pedestrians that cross the intersection by Trump Tower is "probably some of the highest in the Western world," according to Polly Trottenberg, the  Department of Transportation Commissioner.

She added that 140 buses run through Fifth Avenue during the morning rush hour.
