Donald Trump ‘will be better for Europe than Hillary Clinton’ claims top German politician

FORMER Bavarian prime minister Edmund Stoiber has claimed Donald Trump’s presidential win could help thaw relations between the West and Russia, describing it as a “real change for Europe”.

Stoiber claimed he thought Trump could adopt better relations with Russia than Barack Obama has managed during his presidency and believes Hillary Clinton would not have been a good choice from a European perspective.

He said: “This choice is a real change for Europe.

“In the future, we will have to take a lot more responsibility than before, because Trump will focus on the US in particular.

“America will continue to withdraw as a world policeman and also as a champion of free world trade. Europe must now make its own interests.”

Stoiber, who is a key figure in the Christian Social Union party, was critical of the negative European response to Trump’s election win and said that Europe should see the result as an opportunity.

He said: “I am amazed at the haughty criticism in Germany and Europe of the US voters.

“The media landscape was unanimously of the opinion that Clinton will win and Trump is impossible - this is a disgrace for the media.”

However, Stoiber was critical of Trump’s tactics in his bid to become President, describing it as “almost a fact-free election campaign characterised by pessimism and aggression”.

Asked what lessons Germany could learn from Trump’s election victory, Stoiber claimed that the country should discuss every aspect of politics as openly as possible.
Alongside his political duties, Stoiber is the Co-Chairman on the Advisory Board of FC Bayern Munich

He added: “The people are worried and sometimes use a language that is perhaps not politically correct.

“But we can not dismiss it.

“If we do not give the small people the signal that we take their fears and problems seriously and understand their language, then there is the danger that we can no longer bind many of us.”

Stoiber, who now holds a high-profile position at football giants FC Bayern Munich, has previously expressed support for the US in the policy on Iraq while he is also known for his close relationship with Russian premier Vladimir Putin.

He has been described as “Moscow’s Trojan Horse” by one author and has enjoyed privileges including private dinner at Putin’s residence outside Moscow.
