The European leader’s controversial statements reportedly included Hollande saying the justice system was “full of cowards”, that there were “too many immigrants” and that there was a “problem” with Islam.
Mr Hollande also spoke harshly about senior politicians in the book, which was released just as he intended to make public his desire to run for the presidency again in 2017.
He blamed US President Barack Obama for creating ISIS saying: “I don't know what would have happened if we had carried out strikes. What I can say is that we did not carry out strikes, and there's Daesh.”
Now party members are giving up on the leader following the hapless blunder.
The party are scrambling to pick up the pieces, looking to Prime Minister Manuel Valls - who is disliked in the party - and Segolene Royal – the environment minister and an ex partner of Mr Hollande who is equally unsuccessful in electoral races.
Political Scientist Bruno Cautres: “I’m stunned by the speed of his collapse.
“That book was like a missile that destroyed his strategy just as it was beginning to become interesting.”
The fall from grace of the major party could see Marine Le Pen’s Front Nationale rise to even greater success.
In June the Front National leader was found to be twice as popular as current French president, Francois Hollande.
Le Pen – who wants France to quit Brussels and the Euro – is also ahead of popular former President Nicolas Sarkozy.
More than a quarter of voters say they would give their first preference vote to Le Pen in next year's presidential election.
The alarming news of a surge in support for avowed Eurosceptic Le Pen will therefore come as a serious blow to mainstream French parties.
France will elect its next president in a two-round election in April and May next year, with only the top two candidates progressing to the all-important run-off in the second round.
