SAIFAI (UTTAR PRADESH): Shivpal Yadav, the Samajwadi Party's new chief in Uttar Pradesh, wore a big smile on Wednesday morning and flaunted like a badge of honour, his closeness to older brother and all-powerful party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
"I have spoken to Netaji, I will abide by what he says," said Shivpal Yadav, 61, in home town Saifai, adding, "No one has the temerity to go against what Netaji says." He is likely meet the SP chief in Delhi later today.
That was clearly directed at nephew and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who stripped Shivpal of all his powerful ministries in the state late last night and handed him only the social welfare portfolio.
"That is the prerogative of the chief minister," Shivpal Yadav said, his smile not faltering, as he confirmed that he would be meeting "Netaji," the name given to Mulayam Singh Yadav by everyone in his family and party, including son Akhilesh.
Hours before Akhilesh divested his uncle of his ministries yesterday, his father had removed him as state party chief and installed Shivpal, putting him in the driver's seat for the party's preparations for the UP elections.
Tuesday's fast-paced developments brought the Yadav family feud out in the open. It pits father vs son months before the UP assembly elections early next year, when the Samajwadi Party will seek to retain power in the state.
Akhilesh Yadav, who was to inaugurate the repair of all roads in UP this noon, has cancelled all his official engagements today. This mammoth exercise would've been overseen by uncle Shivpal as PWD minister, but is now no more his charge.
"It is very said what is happening right now," Ballu Yadav , a prominent student leader in the Samajwadi Party said in Saifai about the bitter feud that first came out in the open when Akhilesh opposed Shivpal's plan to merge gangster Mukhtar Ansari's party with the Samajwadi Party.
Akhilesh Yadav, who has been lacerated by the opposition for poor law and order in the state, is desperately attempting an image makeover before the elections. He had sacked two ministers on Monday over alleged corruption despite the fact that they were close to his father.
The BJP has dismissed it as "family drama." Rivals see in it an elaborate plan to project Akhilesh Yadav as the young rebel willing to take on even his father and uncle to uphold clean politics.
