Trump and Acosta were embroiled in a bitter public dispute during a press conference.

The US President at one point hissed, “OK that’s enough” before a White House intern tried to take the microphone from the journalist to stop his pressing questions.

Trump claims Acosta “laid his hands” on the female staff member after he gently moved the microphone away.

A CNN spokesman said after the ruling: “We are gratified with this result and we look forward to a full resolution in the coming days.

"Our sincere thanks to all who have supported not just CNN, but a free, strong and independent American press.”

Speaking outside the courthouse, Acosta told fellow reporters: “I just want to say something very briefly...

"I want to thank all of my colleagues in the press who supported us this week and I want to thank the judge for the decision he made today and let’s get back to work.”

During his Presidential campaign, Trump told CNN that he would not kick reporters out the White House.

But since getting office, his stance has changed and suggested on Twitter that others could be blacklisted too.

The President’s threats are against decades of tradition and critics accuse him of censorship.
