A day after the Prime Minister invoked Lord Rama at his Dussehra speech in Lucknow, the Congress called it a political act meant to further his party's agenda.
In the run up to the assembly elections in 2017, the political rhetoric is getting shriller. A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Dussehra at Aishbagh ground in Lucknow, the Congress has accused the PM of using Lord Rama for political gains.
Launching a sharp attack on his Dussehra address, which the PM started by invoking Lord Rama, Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal said, "I would like to ask the PM what if Vice President Hamid Ansari addressed a congregation starting with Allah hu Akbar?"
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
Afzal said Narendra Modi holds a constitutional post and therefore he must think "if he should have used Jai Sri Ram for furthering his party's agenda".
Given the BJP's stand on the Ayodhya issue, Afzal said that every time the Prime Minister talks about Lord Rama, people are bound to link it to the temple.
RAMA IS FOR ELECTION SEASON
Pramod Tiwari, the in-charge of the Congress coordination committee for the UP polls, said that the Ram Mandir has always been a poll issue for the BJP. "During every election season, the BJP picks up this topic and after the election puts Rama in a box and locks him away," Tiwari said.
Accusing the Prime Minister of politicising Lord Rama, Tiwari said the PM must explain why he does not use the same invocation of 'Jai Sri Ram' while attending other functions.
Senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that the Prime Minister remembers Uttar Pradesh only when the elections are due. "The PM's speech is sheer politics. He has no faith in Sri Ram. This is just an attempt to woo voters," said Alvi, who belongs to UP.
