At the KR Circle subway in Bengaluru on Sunday, a car carrying a 23-year-old woman and her family became submerged in neck-deep water, and the woman drowned. Banurekha, the victim, was employed by Infosys. The rest of Banurekha's family who were travelling with her were rescued by firefighters.
The woman and her family, who had travelled to the IT Capital from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, were on a tour of the city.
Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, announced a 5 lakh rupee payout to the woman's family. The family was reportedly out touring in the rented car, according to Siddaramaiah, who went to the scene of the event.
"The family travelled to Bengaluru in a hired automobile from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Bhanurekha is employed with Infosys. The motorist should not have taken the danger of crossing the underpass because of the downpour, which caused the barricade at the underpass to collapse, Siddaramaiah told reporters.
Those who were there said the driver attempted to drive quickly through the water but instead caused the car to become buried. The rain and hailstorm caused the water level to begin rising. People in the area jumped to the family's rescue as they began to call out for assistance, according to news agency PTI.
To stay afloat, they hurled ropes and saris. Those caught tried to climb up but were unsuccessful. Others were pulled out using a ladder, while two of them were dragged out by swimmers from the emergency services staff.
Bhanurekha was found dead when the survivors got to the hospital. At the hospital, there was a raucous outpouring of grief when the survivors saw their family member's lifeless body.
Bengaluru saw major waterlogging on Sunday as a result of Sunday's torrential rain. Residents in several regions of the city were unable to do their regular routines due to the rain.
