Man charged with murder of mother-of-two near public car park

A mother-of-two has been bashed to death near a public car park in Adelaide's south in what police have described as an apparently random murder with no clear motive.

Police and paramedics were called to Noarlunga Centre shopping precinct shortly after midnight, to find the 36-year-old woman unconscious with serious head injuries.

A member of the public, and then ambulance crews, tried to desperately to save the woman's life, but their efforts were in vain and she died at the scene.

As those events unfolded, police confronted a 20-year-old suspect nearby, who was arrested.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Fitzgerald said it appeared the man and woman did know one another.

"This is a tragedy where we are currently looking at what the motive is, however, at this stage both parties are not known to each other and we're not certain as to what the motive is," he said.

"We don't believe it is robbery.

"Our thoughts are with the family at the moment.

"The nature of the head injuries were quite severe and significant, however, there were no weapons used."

The victim is from Adelaide's western suburbs and police were trying to determine why she had been at Noarlunga Centre when she was attacked.

Detectives say she may have been visiting family in the area.

The suspect was held at an Adelaide hospital for several hours, undergoing forensic tests, before being taken to the police watch house and formally charged with murder.

He is expected to face court later today.

Shocked southern suburbs locals have begun placing flowers are the scene.
