Huge crash on M4 Motorway involving lorry and minibus – 4 helicopters scrambled

AT LEAST three people are critically injured after a crash on the M4 motorway involving a minivan and a lorry.

The "serious collision" has closed the M4 in Berkshire this afternoon, with emergency services still on the scene.

The accident happened on the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 at Hungerford and Junction 13 at Chieveley.

A spokesman for the Air Ambulance Service confirmed three helicopters were sent to the scene.

Pictures show motorists standing outside their vehicles, with one driver calling the accident the "worst he'd seen".

Motorist James Lloyd wrote: "M4 closed due to worst accident I've ever seen in many years of driving.

"Avoid area and if you're caught in the tailback be patient.

"I promise you don't want to get past it until emergency services are finished."

A spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service said: "Three people in the minibus had sustained life-threatening injuries; one was flown to the major trauma centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, one went by road to the major trauma centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and the third was flown to the major trauma centre at Bristol Southmead Hospital.

"Three further people in the minibus had sustained less serious injuries, two of whom were taken by road to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, and the third to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading.”

Thames Valley Police tweeted: "Officers have closed part of the M4 in Berkshire following a serious collision.

"The eastbound carriageway between Junction 14 at Hungerford and 13 at Chieveley is likely to remain closed for several hours.

"Please avoid the area and take alternative routes."

Motorists have reported some of the traffic is gradually being released past the scene.

Highways England said it is "working hard" to release traffic, adding part of the motorway will remain closed as police investigate the crash.

A spokeswoman from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two crews from Newbury Fire Station and the Heavy Rescue Unit from Dee Road Fire Station were sent to the scene, alongside crews from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"Crews supported South Central Ambulance Service and Thames Valley Police at the incident.

"They were on the scene for around two hours."
