Rioters battle police and burn the US flag in second night of protests over Donald Trump's election win

Armed officers were forced to use pepper spray, flash grenades and rubber bullets as a 4,000 strong demonstration turned into a full-scale riot

Police in Oregon arrested 26 people after protests over Donald Trump ’s election as US President turned violent leaving Portland looking like a “war zone”.

Armed officers were forced to use pepper spray, flash grenades and rubber bullets as a 4,000 strong demonstration turned into a full-scale riot.

According to police , many in the crowd had attempted to stop trouble from breaking out but were unable to prevent a hardcore group of protestors vandalising building and vehicles while spray-painting messages such as "F--- Trump.”

During Thursday night "anarchists" in the crowd threw several objects at officers, Portland Police Sergeant Pete Simpson said.

Initially, Trump hit out at the demonstrations before backtracking to commend what he called "small groups" for their passion as thousands took to the streets across the country.

Protests and marches continued in other US cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Denver, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Dallas and Oakland, California.

“Love the fact that small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. We will all come together and be proud,” he tweeted following the second night of unrest since his shock election win.

It was a reversal of his earlier complaint accusing “professional protesters” and the media of inciting what he called “very unfair” demonstrations.

Journalists in Portland likened the city to a “war zone” while police officials declared the protest a riot as outraged voters burned flags and smashed store fronts and car windows.

“After several orders to disperse, police have used less lethal munitions to effect arrests and move the crowd. (Officers) still taking projectiles,” police said in a Twitter post.

“Due to extensive criminal and dangerous behaviour, protest is now considered a riot. Crowd has been advised.”

Elsewhere roughly 1,000 protesters in Oakland, California smashed shop windows, daubed graffiti on buildings and threw firecrackers, Molotov cocktails and bottles at police officers, authorities said.

Eleven people were arrested, including one man who had seven Molotov cocktails in his possession.

Some of those arrested were accused of assaulting police officers.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a top Trump aide, described the thousands of anti-Trump protesters as “a bunch of spoiled cry-babies.”
