NEW DELHI: US Republican Donald Trump beat Democrat Hillary Clinton to win the election that will make him the 45th President of the United States, AP reported.
After a long and bitterly-fought campaign, Trump today engendered a shock upset by winning 276 electoral votes from 27 states, six more than the 270 needed to win the Presidency. His opponent, former Secretary of State Clinton, won a fewer-than-expected 218 votes. Results are still coming in from some states, but they no longer matter.
Crucial for Trump were wins in the 'swing states' Ohio, North Carolina and Florida. 'Swing states' are states that don't consistently vote for any of the two major parties.
Unlike his rival Clinton, who has served as a US Senator and Secretary of State, Trump has never before held public office. The 70-year-old Republican was, until the campaign began, famous for his abrasive hosting of The Apprentice, a reality television series. He's chairman and president of the Trump Organization, a conglomerate of businesses.
Trump's campaign was called divisive and misogynist. He was called racist and sexist. During the election season, he infamously called for a ban on all Muslims entering the US and described Mexican immigrants as criminals, drug dealers and rapists.
Analysts believed his campaign suffered a massive blow when the US media unearthed a 2005 video showing him making extremely crude remarks about sexually assaulting women.
